Helpful Hints For Training A Well-Behaved Dog

By Bob

Puppy training can be frustrating, especially with a new pet. It might seem fruitless at times, but it is important work.

Keep your dog calm when you enter the room. It is nice to calmly play with your dogs, but remember to stay relaxed. Try to ignore your dog when your first enter the room because this will help to keep them calm and reinforce that you are in control.

Always reward good, calm behavior. Reward them only when your dog is calm after it performs a trick. You might be happy about the progress your dog has made but you need to quell your excitment. You should stay calm and then give the reward.

Dogs have great focus and can focus on one thing, ignoring everything else, until something breaks their attention. If you are consistent and use repetition, your dog will start to wait for your signals before focusing on something.

Consistency is of the utmost importance when it comes to crate training. If you remove the pup from the crate, see to it that he has the means to go potty. In time, the dog will have the ability to exercise restraint when it comes to nature’s call.

When you are house training your puppy, remember, what goes in, must come out. To ensure that your dog’s bowel movements remain regular, feed him or her some high-quality food a minimum of twice per day during the same times daily. This way, you will have a good idea of when your pup needs to go out, so that there is less of a chance that an accident will occur.

You must begin your relationship with the dog as the boss for any training to be effective. He needs to know that you are the authority before he will let you train him. When walking with your dog, always walk first, never let your dog lead, as this is the leadership position.

Be patient when training a dog. This will make it less likely that you or your dog will become frustrated or upset with the process of training. Your dog wants to do what you ask him to, but you have to give him the commands in a way in which he understands what is expected.

Let your dog get a minimum of an hour of exercise every day, and do this in addition to standard breaks outside for potty and training. This exercise will ensure that your dog is focused when it is training time. An exercised dog is a happy and responsive dog.

Pay attention to your tone when you are disciplining your dog. Your dog can usually tell how you are feeling. A disciplinary command is best delivered in a stern tone.

It is important that you teach your dog proper behaviors from day one. Trying to change bad behaviors after the fact is far more difficult than teaching them the good ones right away. If you don’t want your dog to be constantly begging for food when you are at the table, don’t feed it food scraps in the first place.

Keep notice of dogs that are nearby when you are outside with your pet. There are some dogs that are aggressive for reasons that have nothing to do with their owners. If you see an antisocial or aggressive dog, avoid having your dog be near it.

Using a loose leash is key when you are training your dog to accept a leash. When dogs go on walks, they frequently want to explore all the new sights and sounds. Excited pups tend to place some strain on the limitations of the leash. Instead of setting up this dynamic, put some slack into the leash in order to help your pet walk with you.

A good training tip is to be aware of the special grooming needs of your dog’s breed. Different dogs require different levels of grooming, with some needing little and some needing a lot. A dog who is properly cleaned and groomed is protected against sickness and is more comfortable and easygoing.

One thing to remember when training your dog is that all your actions are molding its behavior and personality. This is something you need to know since you might undo desired behaviors with horse-playing or teasing them. You will want to mold your dog by always working toward desired behavior.

Understand that more mature dogs do have some basic limitations. Older dogs may never learn all the tricks in the book. Understand that if your dog is older, he or she is going to have things already set into their minds that is going to be virtually impossible to remove. While it may be possible to teach them new habits, sometimes it’s best to concentrate on the negative things that you can alter, and learn to live with the other things.

Since you have now read this article with its many ideas, tricks, tips and techniques, you can have a better behaved dog for a happier home. Apply any of these ideas that you can in the near future and witness the results.
